KID PROOF: Chalkboard Paint

It’s a tale as old as time: Mom or dad looks away for what seems like 60 seconds and comes back to find a wall scrawled all over with lipstick, sharpie or some other hard-to-remove substance. That’s one of the reasons why I love the idea of chalkboard paint—a designated wall that the kids are actually allowed to draw on.

You can buy a quart of chalkboard paint for less than $15 online or at your local hardware store, and after just a couple of coats, let the kids go to town. Your littlest artists can use your homemade chalkboard as a scribble space, and the older kids can even practice spelling and writing.

Plus, if you’re an artsy parent, you can do some pretty cool things with chalkboard paint yourself too.

And just in case the idea of a chalkboard in your house seems a little too messy, did you know they make whiteboard paint too?

XO, Denise

I love this idea, and here's another for those colorful creative children. Take small pots of Tempra paint and add a 1/4 teaspoon of non-toxic natural liquid dish soap.(I used inexpensive plastic measuuring cups. The handles make it easier for younger children to carry with them.) Mix it up and allow the children to paint on anything that can take dampness. I had a child paint pictures of her family on her desk. Her parents were awed by it and asked for more of the children's bedroom furniture to be painted.
Oh, and don't worry about paint frocks either. The dish soap will keep the pigment in the paints from staining everyday, machine washable fabrics, so your children have more freedom to be themselves.

The Tempra paint should be premixed, either in the factory or according to the insrtuctions on the label before adding the dish soap.
