My Mother's Story

I was recently given the opportunity to discuss an issue that's very near to my heart with "Living with Cancer" magazine. In the cover story, I share my personal experience with my mother's battle with kidney cancer. I hope you take a look and pass it along—the first part of prevention is awareness.

My beloved husband loss his battle with kidney cancer December 2011. He was diagnosed November 2005. After blood showed up in his urine he was in emergency surgery having tumor size of two limes and left kidney removed. No previous pain no warning. Recurring tumor in 2007, metastasized to lungs in 2009, spread to bone/spine in 2010, spread to liver and brain in 2011. He had immunotherapy, sutent, cryoablation and five back surgeries. He thrived to live long as he could so our five year old grandson would remember him. He was the bravest person I have ever known. He will always be my hero.
Sorry for your loss of your mother. Thank you for your voice in helping us in making kidney cancer known.

My dad died of colon and rectum cancer in 98. He fought for 4 yrs and got soo tired of the chemo treatments that he decided not to do them anymore. My mom was taking care of him til the very last. They wouldnt give him the treatments around the holidays but would start again in january. He told me that he was tired of the treatments and didnt want to continue. I told him what would happen if he stoped and he was ready for it. Whithin 6 months he was gone. Now in june of 2011, my mom has brain cancer. For two years she was getting dizzy spells, headaches, and couldnt see straight. She told her doctors for an mri several times and they always said it was vertigo. One night in June 2011 she was crawling on the floor cause she couldnt even stand up. My brother went to check on her and found her and toke her to the emergency room. They did and mri right away and found a tumor the size of a plum. So now she is fighting and praying and doing her treatments with a persciption of chemo at home. I dont know how much longer she will be us, but for now every minute counts. So i know what you went through cause i lost one parent and now im losing another.

My mom would have turned 90 today but passed in '74. As a little boy looking after his mother after radical double mastectomy, changing dressings and putting mercurochrome on her open wounds was the hardest thing iv'e had to do. We both were crying, she wincing at every drop and telling me that i was helping her and not hurting... i was 8 years old and my mom gave me a profound gift of compassion and love.I looked after my dad until 2 weeks before his death from prostate cancer in '95. They both made me the man i am today. My wife and i are both over 50 now and look after each other and our 4 year old puppy.I am reminded of a line from the movie "Brazil" Robert De Niro's character says to Jonathan Pryce, "We're all in this together"
