The Lousy Truth: Kids and Lice

Lice. It might not be the most appealing topic of discussion, but chances are every mom is going to have to deal with it at one point or another. Once one kid catches it, it can become quite the epidemic around school and it’s very hard to get rid of. Lice was going around at my daughters' school recently, so I decided to take preventative measures. Maybe they worked—my girls stayed lice-free! Here are the easy (and eco-friendly) home remedies I used across to stop the little buggers in their tracks:

Olive Oil
– If you apply enough olive oil to the hair and scalp, lice won’t be able to breathe in it. Mayonnaise and Vaseline might be even more effective, but they’re harder to wash out.

Tea Tree Oil
– Essential oils like tea tree oil are known to act as insect repellants. Just mix a few drops into your child’s shampoo, or put a few drops behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.

Braids
– When lice is going around, send your girls to school with their hair up in a braid or a bun. Lice find it harder to get a hold of hair that is up and out of the way.

Do you have any home remedies to prevent lice? I’d love it if you shared them.

XO, Denise

We went through this last year. What a pain it was. Had to cut my daughter's hair. Her hair is so fine and it's layered so it's hard to baraid her hair. It was so hard to pull the nits out! I'll have to look out for that Nitty gritty comb, never heard of this. I'll have to try the Olive oil too. Thanks for the tips:)
